chapter twenty
I rolled into work around eleven. I wouldâve been there earlier, but had to park in the overflow parking lot and take the shuttle to Main Street. It would be like this for the rest of the month, so I might as well get used to it. At least it let up a bit during the weekdays, but weekends were another thing.
I threw my stuff into my locker, put on my apron, and was behind the bar within ninety seconds of stepping through the door. I barely said much more than hi, or behind you, to Zeke and the other servers over the next few hours. When it finally did slow down, I found Zeke in Booneâs office doing paperwork. Boone had been gone a bit over a month and none of us had any clue when he was returning, so it was up to Zeke to run things, which included making the schedule.
I poked my head through the door. âI hope my cousin is paying you well for all of this extra work.â
âI live rent free, eat all my meals free, and get a decent wage, so no need for any extra pay. And I enjoy what I do. Except for scheduling.â He shook a paper at me. âItâs like the worst math problem ever. Jenna can only work mornings, Tammy can only work evenings, Matt can work any hours, but has a romantic historyâhis wordsâwith both Jenna and Tammy, so I canât schedule him when either of them are working. Frank prefers to work behind the bar, but heâs a terrible bartender.â
I stepped into the office and sat in the chair beside his desk, closing the door behind me. âAnd Star? Whatâs that girlâs problem?â
âShe works too much and doesnât clock in for half those hours.â He raised his eyebrows at me. âI saw you here every day last week, yet your timecard only shows twenty-two hours.â
I shrugged. âFamily helps family. But speaking of that, I am going to take a couple of days off this week.â
âGood girl! Doing anything fun?â
âOh, just the usual. Netflix binge, brunch with friends, trying to solve a murder.â
He lowered his voice. âPlease tell me youâre not getting involved in Nessaâs death, Star.â
âNessaâs murder. I already have. And itâs not going so great.â I confided in him about my suspicions, including talking to Nessa, falling on the stairs, and my visions.
Zeke leaned back in his chair and clasped his hands behind his head. âYou have to be careful. You couldâve died on those stairs like Nessa. And if she was murdered and the wrong people know youâre snooping around in this, whoever killed Nessa could come after you next.â
âI know. You donât have to lecture me. Iâm aware that I have no business trying to solve a murder. I donât know what the crap Iâm doing. Hell, I was shocked every time they unmasked the bad guy in Scooby Doo.â
The lines in his face eased, and a grin curled his lips. He
